The use of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) has been increasing dramatically worldwide. ![]() Also, with the best prediction model, we made a public website that enables users to input information to predict their intentions of smoking cigarettes. In our investigation, the Gradient Boosting Classifier, one of the prediction models, shows the highest accuracy out of all the other models. To construct the prediction models, five machine learning (ML) algorithms are exploited and tested for their accuracy in predicting the intention to smoke cigarettes among never smokers using data from the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS). In this paper, we research the prediction models that can be used to predict an individual e-cigarette user's (including non-e-cigarette users) intention to smoke cigarettes, so that one can be early informed about the risk of going down the path of smoking cigarettes. However, there is a lack of research on developing prediction models, which is more applicable to anti-smoking campaign, about e-cigarette and cigarette. There were many researches about e-cigarette and cigarette that mostly focused on finding and analyzing causes of smoking using conventional statistics. Additionally, the use of e-cigarette has a possibility of leading to the use of cigarettes, which is more severe. This is problematic since consuming nicotine at an early age can cause harmful effects in developing teenager's brain and health. ![]() The use of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is increasing among adolescents. This shelter could be anything - a person, a movie, music. I also love to swim and have fun, and I used to go with some friends of mine, so we’d party at night on the beach. I love to spend time by the sea, just having very simple moments disconnected from the stress of everyday life and sitting on the beach and watching the waves. This shelter is a very precious thing that is never changing and that you always go back to.įor me, it’s this very special relationship I have with the sea. I think we are living in a very tough era, and it is very easy to get lost and forget who you are. It’s just a safe place to escape, this secret thing we all have when life is going too fast and you are full of anxiety. But Shelter, this time, was quite simple. I had a song called “Tir nan og” on the first album. In Celtic literature, you have the idea of Tír na nOg, this island of eternal youth. Does Shelter represent an extension of that idea? There’s always been an escapist aspect of Alcest, which links well with European literature, too - Tír na nOg, New Atlantis, and so on. I just make this music, and it’s coming from the deepest parts of myself. I do this music precisely to not have to speak about what is behind the music. There is a lot of hope, a lot of nostalgia, something very uplifting and spiritual, these otherworldly melodies. It’s a band I created in order to translate into music a very special experience that happened to me when I was a child - something very spiritual and difficult to describe. The big challenge was not to lose the essence of Alcest and the core, but just changing the approach. It was very important for me to do this genre switch otherwise, it would’ve felt really strange for me - and very insincere. It felt strange to go to the studio and not do exactly what you’d like to do in that moment. ![]() I started thinking about this in a more concrete and precise way during the recording of our previous album, Les Voyages de l’Âme. I got used to those songs.Īlso Read Compact Discs: Sound of the Future ![]() I started as a metal kid, playing black metal when I was a young teenager. But that’s what I was used to doing, playing this kind of metal-shoegaze stuff. I never felt completely accomplished with the metal songs, because it always sounded too heavy for me. When did you know that’s the direction it would take? Shelter is such a stark stylistic change for Alcest, far away from black metal, toward the post-rock and the shoegaze you’ve flirted with in the past. “This record is going to get a lot of hate - it already is getting some,” he says, laughing. ![]() Those changes seem to be the one concession he’s willing to make to his heavy-metal past. They’d been working, he said, to make this relatively feather-light new material fit into a set list with the older, heavier stuff - adding distortion, tweaking rhythms, massaging the set list. It’s a transitional album, divergent for Alcest but a bit overly familiar if you’ve heard either of those other bands nonetheless, the prospect of breaking up with black metal seems to have inspired Neige, even if it will probably cost him a kvlt of longtime fans.Įarlier this week, Neige was in Eastern France, rehearsing with the touring four-piece iteration of Alcest at the home of his drummer, Winterhalter. In fact, the cathedral-size Shelter foregoes almost all traces of heaviness at all, opting instead for shoegaze dream states bolstered by guest spots from Slowdive frontman Neil Halstead and longtime Sigur Rós producer Birgir Jón Birgisson. But the fourth album from French black metal band Alcest clearly proclaims that frontman Neige is no longer concerned with cred - or maybe even black metal - at all. If bands want to keep their credibility intact, they aren’t supposed to discuss intended audiences or obvious influences - or audiences and influences they’re willing to abandon. ![]() "Paradise Lost creates an engrossing, always entertaining and subtly intelligent infrastructure and then, in one swift and neatly understated feint, it takes us right down into the gravel of utopia…" "My main takeaway was a renewed conviction that the public realm, and weird, possibly slightly sad, but open-ended spaces in the city must be fought for, that we must defend and seek to expand 'the right to the city'." And in the first national election since Trump left office, his continued attempts to remake the GOP in his image appeared more poison pill than Midas touch, with Trumpist candidates underperforming across the map.Īt the same time, the mainstream Republicans who ignored Trump often prevailed, holding governorships in Georgia, Ohio and New Hampshire. Americans broadly support abortion rights and continue to consider them a high priority in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June overturning of Roe v. TIME illustrationĭespite the mixed verdict, messages emerged from the morass. Caught between Democratic fecklessness and Republican lunacy, voters delivered a stalemate-not a vote of confidence, but a repudiation of sorts for both parties. And while Democrats breathed a sigh of relief, voters’ dissatisfaction with the country’s direction was evident, particularly when it came to the economy and public safety. While the balance of power in Washington shifted in Republicans’ direction, their failure to capitalize on a favorable political environment will lead to more recriminations than celebrations. Republicans retained Senate seats in Ohio, Florida, and Wisconsin again vanquished Democratic gubernatorial candidates Stacey Abrams and Beto O’Rourke in Georgia and Texas and picked up House races in New York, even upsetting the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Sean Patrick Maloney. Republicans’ biggest cause for celebration was in Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis won a staggering victory in the onetime swing state. The far-right GOP Congresswoman Lauren Boebert appeared in danger of a shocking loss in a deep-red Colorado district. Democrats hung on in Senate races the Republicans targeted in New Hampshire, Colorado, Washington, and likely Arizona. Governor John Fetterman defeated celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, taking a Senate seat previously in GOP hands. The abortion-rights side swept ballot initiatives in Michigan, Kentucky, California and Vermont. The Democrats flipped governor’s mansions in Maryland and Massachusetts while thwarting challenges from Donald Trump acolytes in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Vulnerable House Democratic incumbents held onto contested seats from Virginia to Ohio to Kansas. But the predicted red wave was barely a ripple. The ingredients had been there for a Republican rout: inflation at a four-decade high, real wages shrinking, gas prices up, an unpopular aging president. In the Senate, too, Republicans fell short of their hopes, with control of the chamber still undecided and a December runoff pending in Georgia. “When you wake up tomorrow, we will be in the majority.”Īs the dust settled on a most unusual election, most signs still pointed to McCarthy’s prediction coming to pass-but by a slim margin that surprised both parties. Finally, at 2 a.m., McCarthy emerged to proclaim what he wished to be true: “It is clear we are going to take the House back,” he said. The bar closed partygoers limped toward the exits. 8 midterm elections, Kevin McCarthy, the House GOP leader, was sure he and his party would have much to celebrate.īut the triumph never materialized-and as the night wore on, neither did McCarthy. Utah, Nevada, California and Arizona are included in the “mild, drier than normal category,” while Washington, Oregon and Idaho are labeled “brisk, normal precipitation.” Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas should be “chilly with normal precipitation.” New England’s prediction is “significant shivers: slushy, icy, snowy,” while the Great Lakes area is expected to be “unreasonably cold and snowy,” down to the southern Gulf states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia, where the forecast is “shivery, wet and slushy.” “The Far West and the Pacific Northwest will see about-normal winter precipitation however, the Southwest will experience less than normal,” it says. Not everyone will receive the icy blast, though, according to the prediction. Mid-January is likely to bring “heavy rain and snow across the eastern two-thirds of the country,” then the a blast of exceedingly cold arctic air - as low as “40 degrees below zero.” ![]() Predictions include big storms in early January in the Rockies and across the Plains, with “heavy snow that may reach as far south as Texas and Oklahoma, followed by a sweep of bitterly cold air.” in December and lingering all season in the eastern half of the country.
